Membership Requirements
To be a member of the Jolly Hookers you must be sponsored by a current Jolly Hooker. (Come to a meeting and you can easily find a sponsor.) You do not have to own a boat to belong to the club.

Our History
Early in 1979, several SIR (Sons in Retirement) members from Branch 49 asked: “If SIR sponsors golf, bowling, horseshoes, bridge, travel, etc. … why not also fishing?”
An initial organization luncheon was held on May 16, 1979 and, of the 18 people indicating interest in forming a fishing group, 16 attended. The group was called “Fishin' SIRS” and the purpose was to enhance interest in fishing, to provide an organized means for getting fishermen together, and to promote fellowship that would encourage unscheduled fishing outings.
Since Al Lowe started the group, he became the first leader. Three ocean trips and several outings at Folsom and nearby lakes were held the first year. The second year, Roger Hebner was our leader and we had even more activities. Roger established a regular plan for three ocean trips a year. The third year, Bud Lyndon was in charge. The organization continued to prosper, and to create more pizzazz, Bud suggested the name “Jolly Hookers.”
All expenses were funded by member donations. Prizes and awards funds were made available through these donations, overrides on luncheons, and sales of tackle donated by widows of Dr. Wiley, Ben Winkleman, Jack Sheehan, Bud Lyndon, Merv Brown, and others.
The group grew to 75 members in 1983 and at the end of 2011 had 98 members. Because of declining membership, in 2019 we reorganized the club, independent of SIR sponsorship with the goal of increasing our membership. Several members elected to continue their participation in SIR, but the club is now open without any affiliation.
The Jolly Hookers offer special non-derby outings to places like Lake Shasta, Whiskeytown Lake, Lake Almanor, Pyramid Lake, NV, and Flaming Gorge in Utah/Wyoming. Day outings to the Pacific Ocean, Delta, and the Sacramento River are also scheduled throughout the year.
There is an annual fund-raising “tackle” auction normally in August and a Christmas dinner in December. Our regular monthly breakfast meetings are usually followed with informative fishing seminars presented by local fishing experts and guides.
Through the efforts of all the past Head Hookers, Steering Committees, and other volunteers, much fishing activity, fellowship, and enjoyment has been provided for a lot of members over the years.
